LiLAQ?: improving Linux Audio Quality

When working with AC power sources, you should proceed with caution, because messing with 120 or 240 volts without understanding what you are doing CAN KILL YOU.

So please note that this site is written by people who are NOT electrical engineers, and please take the time to learn everything you can before you fiddle with your AC wiring, because information presented here may not be accurate and we can NOT be held responsible if you get killed while following advice you got on the web. Read TheUsualDisclaimer.

Working with electricity is risky. If you have ANY doubts whatsoever, consult a licensed electrician. In fact, you should do that even if you think you have NO doubts.

Here's the most important advice I can give:

Never disconnect the earth (ground) pin on a power cable.

Jorn Nettingsmeier explains this well: he learned "...absolutely-never-to-tamper-with-earth-connectors on high voltage devices such as computers. sure, i did myself. cures every hum loop. cured a fellow vocalist from eating the microphone. a voltmeter showed more than 100 volts on the metal gaze. (he lives.) must've slipped in somewhere. don't. i mean, just don't."
