Can you build your own digital I/O soundcards? Maybe. here are plans for a complete card you can build yourself, from raw parts! Two optical ins, one optical out, and there even seems to be some sort of linux driver for it! Apparently you could at one time order a pre-built version from elrad, but that doesn't seem to be true anymore.
