LiLAQ?: improving Linux Audio Quality

"I can't get my soundcard to work at all!"

If you haven't got any sound from your system yet, you may want to look at The Linux SoundHOWTO which is available at http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO.html It describes setting up the sound drivers that come with the linux kernel, which are sometimes called the oss-lite drivers.

For serious audio work, it is heavily recommended that you try ALSA, or Advanced Linux Sound Architecture, which is intended to replace the kernel drivers. ALSA has better support for professional-quality soundcards, a better API for multichannel cards, and other nice features. ALSA is still in heavy development but is already quite useable. See the "Alsa Sound Mini-HOWTO": http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Alsa-sound.html for information on getting started with alsa.

Or if you're really frustrated and/or in a hurry, and you have $20, take a look at the OSS-Linux commercial drivers. This may be the quickest way to get things working.

Once your soundcard works, and you want to start actually listening to various kinds of sounds, you may want to read The "Linux Sound Playing HOWTO.": http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Sound-Playing-HOWTO.html

From here on, we will usually assume you have sound mostly working.
