Yet another tip from Michael Brown: "(this)... may apply to other cards too. My Audiotrix Pro when faced with "silence" records an icky digital hash noise at about -66db according to !CoolEdit Pro (Windows). A small amount of signal makes it go away (not covers it, actually makes it stop!). I've found that this only happens at 44.1Khz. At 32Khz and 48Khz, the background noise drops to -76db and it is a broadband hiss, which is far less intrusive, and easier to noise-reduce out. Test out alternative sampling rates, you may find that another rate gives better quality. You will need to possibly employ a sample-rate convertor...."
