If you ever experience a full system lockup while attempting to do full-duplex recording, it is likely that you have a buggy mainboard.
Some Intel boards lock up if they receive a certain pair of instructions very close together, and apparently this only happens if you record and play at the same time. This bug can be worked around in the soundcard driver. The OSS-Linux driver has implemented a workaround for some Intel mainboards; download a demo of the driver and see if it fixes your lockups. (Worked for me.) I do not know whether this workaround has been or will be implemented in ALSA or in the OSS-Free drivers.
You will want to make sure that your system doesn't screw up the data once it comes in from the soundcard.... or on the way back out to the soundcard!
We've all experienced these dropouts: the sound is going along fine, then suddenly there's an instant of silence, then it comes back. The sound cuts on and off, sometimes rapidly with a chattering effect. YUCK.
The best solution to these problems is to use a "low-latency" kernel with software that's designed to take advantage of it. Go to the LowLatency section.
If for some reason you can't do that, you could try to use these OldDropoutTips. But do yourself a favor, and do it the right way; read about LowLatency.
